What is “Doppler Lidar ”?

The term “radar”, such as the metrological radar that measures precipitation and clouds, stands for “RAdio Detection And Ranging,” which denotes range measurement technology that uses radio waves. On the other hand, “Lidar” stands for “LIght Detection And Ranging” or “Laser Imaging Detection And Ranging,” which denotes that measurements are made using light waves.

Lidar systems that can measure the speed of moving objects are called Doppler Lidar. Mitsubishi Electric's Doppler Lidar system observes the movement of aerosols such as minute dust and other particles in the air, and measures the direction and speed of the wind based on that movement.

  • Mitsubishi Electric's Doppler Lidar system uses laser with an eye-safe wavelength of 1.5 µm.
  • Since the system uses laser light, no noise is generated and measurements are not influenced by surrounding noise.
