Treatment Delivery System

The treatment nozzle consists of the following devices: a pair of wobbler magnets and a scattering foil, used to spread the beam in the lateral direction; a ridge filter and bolus, used to form the treatment field in the depth direction; a multi-leaf collimator, which shapes the lateral field to conform to the tumor shape; and the range shifter, used to fine-tune the maximum range of the proton beam.

Treatment Delivery System

Provides quick, flexible and accurate field shaping for treatment.

Beam (Proton Beam),Wobbler magnets,The pair of electromagnets rotates the beam in X and Y directions.,Scatterer,Spreads the beam to form a uniform treatment field.,Ridge Filter,Alters the width of the Bragg peak of the particle beam according to the extent of the tumor in the depth direction.,Range Shifter,Finely adjusts the range of the particle beam by absorbing the beam's energy according to the maximum depth of the tumor.Block Collimator,Blocks any of the particle beam that is outside the uniform field region.,Multi-Leaf Collimator,Many leaves can be independently and rapidly positioned to form a treatment field that conforms to the shape of the tumor.,Bolus,Adjusts the particle beam's range to suit the tumor shape on the distal side.,Tumor,Multi-leaf collimator,With a leaf pitch of 3.75mm, the treatment field is formed rapidly and accurately according to the shape of the tumor. There is no longer any need to create a collimator for each patient.

Beam Characteristics

Allows selection of the appropriate particle beam for treatment.

Bragg Peak

The particle beam differs from conventional gamma rays or x-rays in that the dose increases deep inside the body. The synchrotron supplies the particle beam at the appropriate energy for the particular depth range.

Bragg Peak
SOBP (Spread-Out Bragg Peak)

The particle beam is spread in the depth direction using the ridge filter. The dose distribution is shaped to conform to the thickness of the tumor.

OCR (Off-Center Ratio) Lateral Field Flatness

The wobbler system spreads the particle beam to form a uniform lateral field, and the multi-leaf collimator creates the optimal treatment field.
