Mitsubishi Electric Announces Industry’s First Single-Chip NTSC Tuner for Televisions

Integrates Channel-Selection and Demodulator Functions onto One Chip

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — September 17, 2001 The Electronic Device Group of Mitsubishi Electric & Electronics USA, Inc., today announced the M61130FP, the industry’s first single-chip NTSC tuner for cost-sensitive television applications. Tuners have traditionally required separate channel-selection and demodulator chips to reduce the effects of crosstalk and noise, but Mitsubishi Electric’s proprietary high-frequency BiCMOS process technology enables these functions to be consolidated onto one chip. Mitsubishi Electric offers the M61130FP in a tiny 7-mm by 7-mm package, making it easy for customers to design ultra-small television tuners.

The M61130FP makes it unnecessary for developers to add an externally connected voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) coil to their design for intermediate-frequency (IF) signal processing. This feature lowers product development costs by reducing the number of tuner components. It also eliminates the inconvenience of VCO coil adjustment during mass production.

"Television manufacturers are under constant pressure to reduce costs and streamline the product development process to remain cost competitive," said George Riehm, senior marketing manager for consumer products at Mitsubishi Electric & Electronics USA, Inc. "Our single-chip tuner reduces development costs by eliminating unnecessary components as well as production steps."

The M61130FP incorporates UHF and VHF mixer and local oscillation circuits, a video/audio IF signal processor circuit, four band switch driver circuits, and a 3.58-MHz or 4-MHz crystal oscillator on the same chip.

Packaging and Availability
Mitsubishi Electric’s M61130FP single-chip NTSC tuner will be available in a 48-pin quad flat pack (QFP) package, with a 0.5-mm pin pitch. Samples will be available in November 2001, with volume production scheduled for the first quarter of 2002.
