Mitsubishi Electric Introduces New Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Peripheral Controller to Complement Full Range of USB Devices
PC Peripheral, Audio-Visual, and Mobile Applications Benefit
from Small Package Size,
Battery-Saving Power Management Function
SUNNYVALE, Calif. December 10, 2002 The Electronic Device Group of Mitsubishi Electric & Electronics USA, Inc., announced it has further extended its Universal Serial Bus (USB) device family with the introduction of its USB 2.0-compliant M66591GP USB Peripheral Controller. Designed for use with an external processor, the device provides both Hi-Speed (480-Mbps) and Full-Speed (12-Mbps) control, bulk, and interrupt USB transfers for PC peripherals such as hard disk and CD-ROM drives, printers, and scanners as well as audio-visual applications like set-top boxes.
Mobile applications that require Hi-Speed functionality, such as digital still cameras and digital video cameras, also benefit from the M66591GP because of its compact 0.4-mm pitch, 10-mm by 10-mm, 80-pin LQFP package; a power management function that conserves battery life; and a 1.8- or 3.3-volt interface power source.
The device can deliver bulk transfers at Hi-Speed and features a built-in USB transceiver, a multi-function high-speed bus interface, an independent 8-bit split bus (DMA interface) as well as a separate/multiplex selectable 16-bit CPU bus. It also has a built-in 3.5-Kbyte FIFO for data buffering and a maximum of seven endpoints for data transfer. Each endpoint is optimized by transfer type, transfer direction, and FIFO memory size. The device not only meets the USB 2.0 standard, but has also passed the USB Compliance Test.
"The M66591GP complements our existing line of USB devices, extending us beyond Full-Speed into the Hi-Speed application space," said George Riehm, senior marketing manager for consumer products at Mitsubishi Electric & Electronics USA, Inc. "With this new device, we now have a range of products that are optimized for any application, depending upon speed requirements and data transfer size."
The M66591GP is the latest in a family of USB devices catering to the growing demand for PC and peripheral data transfer capability. Mitsubishi Electric now offers multiple USB 2.0-compliant devices that deliver Full-Speed or Low-Speed (1.5-Mbps) data transfer rates for wide range of peripherals.
Availability
Mitsubishi Electrics M66591GP begins sampling in January 2003, with volume
production scheduled for the second quarter of 2003.
