Mitsubishi Electric’s Photo Detectors Cost-Effectively Meet Low-Power Requirements for 2.5-Gbps Optical Networks
SUNNYVALE, Calif., July 9, 2002 -
In response to the increasingly stringent low power consumption
and cost-sensitive requirements of the networking market, the Electronic Device
Group of Mitsubishi Electric & Electronics USA, Inc., today announced two
cost-effective photo detector families for fiber to the home (FTTH) and
metropolitan area network (MAN) applications. The PD739C13 Photo Detector family
and PD839C4 Avalanche Photo Detector family are each capable of detecting 2.5
gigabit per second (Gbps) optical fiber transmissions using only a 3.3-volt
power supply.
The new products serve the needs of a wide range of customers for short- to
long-reach applications. The PD739C13 family achieves photo detection by
integrating a photodiode (PD) with a transimpedance amplifier (TIA) and is
designed for optical transmissions of several kilometers (km) to 30 km. The
PD839C4 family integrates an avalanche photodiode (APD) with a transimpedance
amplifier for 20-km to 100-km optical applications.
By leveraging existing technologies, the new products ensure high reliability
while providing customers with a smooth transition to volume production and a
stable source of supply. The new products maintain the same package, pin
positioning, and functions as Mitsubishi Electric’s 5.0-volt photo detector
products, thereby making existing designs easy to upgrade and reducing the
time-to-market for next-generation products.
“Mitsubishi Electric’s new photo detector families costeffectively serve a
wide range of applications with extremely low power consumption and high
reliability,” said Daniel Chen, assistant vice president of high-frequency
products for Mitsubishi Electric & Electronics USA, Inc. “The families use
technology that customers will find familiar, taking much of the guesswork out
of next-generation designs while keeping production lines up and running.”
Packaging and Availability Samples of both families will be available this month, with volume production
scheduled for October 2002.
