RoHS Compliance

RoHS*1, also known as Directive 2002/95/EC, originated in the European Union and restricts the use of six hazardous materials found in electrical and electronic products.

The substances banned under RoHS are lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), hexavalent chromium (CrVI), polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE).

All applicable products in the EU market after July 1,2006 must pass RoHS compliance.

Mitsubishi Electric’ Color TFT-LCD modules have been fully compliant with the RoHS directive since 2005.

RoHS is the acronym for Restriction of Hazardous Substances.

LED Backlight

As an alternative for CCFL*1 tubes that have been widely used as backlights of TFT-LCD modules, there is a growing demand of the LED*2 backlights.

Key reasons for growing demand are that LED’s contain no mercury, do not require the safety and noise countermeasures high-voltage CCFL’s, and have higher luminance efficiency.

At Mitsubishi Electric, we were among the first to focus on white LED and initiated their use in industrial TFT-LCD modules.

White LED backlights are available not only for standard product models, but also for high-brightness products utilized outdoors.
