With TFT-LCD modules becoming more pervasive for human-machine interfaces, new demand is growing in almost every indoor and outdoor application.

Good visibility in outdoor environments now requires TFT-LCD modules with luminance far exceeding the conventional level of 300-500cd/㎡.

For improved visibility in bright outdoor environments, Mitsubishi Electric developed super-high bright TFT-LCD modules in the luminance range of 1000-1500cd/㎡.

Optical Bonding

In recent years, TFT-LCD display modules have gained wide use in a variety of industries such as medical, transportation, avionics, factory automation, point of sale, automotive, marine, and others.

In many applications, the front surface of the TFT-LCD module must be protected by cover glass.

Conventional protection methods frequently created an air-gap between the TFT-LCD module and the protective cover.

This air-gap could create problems with contamination, condensation, impact strength, and display visibility.

As a solution, Mitsubishi Electric can eliminate this air-gap by optically bonding the protective cover glass onto the front surface of the TFT-LCD module.

Optically bonding the cover glass to the TFT-LCD module eliminates contamination/condensation, improves impact strength, increases visibility by reducing reflections, and improves thermal performance.

Anti-Reflection Front Surface

As usage of TFT-LCD modules increases in outdoor environments, elimination of surface reflections becomes very important.

Reducing surface reflection helps improve visibility and contrast outdoors in direct sunlight.

Mitsubishi Electric's TFT-LCD modules offer anti-reflection (AR) front surface treatment options to improve sunlight performance.

Transflective TFT-LCD modules

Transflective TFT-LCD modules have both “transmissive” and “reflective” modes.

Both display modes work together for enhanced performance.

In darker environments, the “transmissive” mode is dominant with emissions from the display’s backlight.

In bright environments, the “reflective” mode of the display is more dominant through reflectance from the internal mirror structure.

Conventional transflective TFT-LCD modules had a “reflective” mode where color reproduction was reduced compared to “transmissive” mode displays.

Mitsubishi Electric has improved the TFT-LCD panel structure to expand the range of color reproduction in the “reflective” mode, realizing a new transflective TFT-LCD module capable of displaying colors as vivid as the “transmissive” mode.

Another advantage of Mitsubishi Electric transflective TFT-LCD modules is power savings compared to traditional “transmissive- only” displays.

Customers using a transflective TFT-LCD can save power by reducing or turning off the display’s backlight during bright environments because the “reflective” mode is dominant.

Wide Operating Temperature Range

Mitsubishi Electric TFT-LCD modules are used a wide variety of outdoor applications where severe cold or heat performance is required.

Mitsubishi has developed TFT-LCD modules with a standard operating temperature range of -30 to 80 degrees C*1.
