4. High Reliability
4-1. Environmental Resistance

Fig.9 LED/CCFL backlight temperature-luminance characteristics.Equipment such as vending machines and gas station fuel pumps are used under various environmental conditions, including both cold and warm climates. LCD modules used for such applications require a wide range of operating temperatures. The majority of Mitsubishi Electric Color TFT-LCD modules are designed to operate over a wide range of temperatures (from -30 to 80°C) in order to accommodate a diverse array of industrial applications, especially outdoor applications.

Figure 9 shows how the luminance of our LED backlight-equipped LCD modules tops LCD modules employing CCFL backlights over the entire temperature range.

We have also developed LCD materials that maintain image quality at high temperatures as well as structural designs that minimize increases in local temperature by efficiently releasing the heat generated by the CCFL/LED backlights. LCD modules for construction machinery applications are designed to ensure optimal performance under operating conditions that are subject to constant vibration over long periods of time.

4-2. Safety Features

We employ the technological know-how we have gained over the years to create circuit designs that minimize harmful electromagnetic interference (EMI). Our LCD modules are checked at our in-house EMI evaluation center to ensure that they meet not only the standards for industrial products (CISPR*4 Pub.22 class-A), but also much stricter consumer product standards (CISPR Pub.22 class-B).

Many Mitsubishi Electric LCD modules, with the exception of small-size models (2.2-, 4.3- and 5-inch units), are also compliant with UL*5 standards. Using LED backlights enables us to make our LCD modules mercury-free and eliminates the need for the high-voltage components normally used for CCFL backlights. In regard to safety standards, these features make our LED-backlit LCD modules more compliance-ready than modules using CCFL backlights.

4-3. Product Life

The lifespan of industrial products is generally five to seven years, with the exception of some that are designed to last over 10 years.

Mitsubishi Electric TFT-LCD modules use CCFL lamps or LED lamps with service lives of up to 50,000 and 60,000 hours, respectively, designed to last for the entire product lifecycle.
