6. Bright Outlook for the Future

Today, we are seeing industrial LCD modules being used just about everywhere, including applications where Color TFT-LCD modules have never been used before. Mitsubishi Electric is continually looking for solutions that will answer our industrial customer's needs with new technologies for applications that are worlds apart from the everyday consumer applications of personal computers and televisions.

6-1. Less is More with LED Backlights

Table 1 Comparison between LED- and CCFL-backlit ultra- high brightness models.Compared to conventional CCFL-backlit LCD modules, Mitsubishi Electric's proprietary LED-backlit Color TFT-LCD modules are an energy-saving solution wrapped in a sleek, lightweight, compact package.

Table 1 outlines our new LED-backlit 12.1-inch ultra high brightness XGA LCD module as compared to our conventional CCFL-backlit model. About half the weight and thickness (47% and 46% less, respectively) of the CCFL-backlit model, the LED-backlit model uses 35% less power; that's a reduction in power consumption of more than one-third. Mitsubishi Electric is moving ahead with plans to commercialize various-sized models designed for outdoor use and incorporating these specifications.

6-2. Touch-screen Bonding

Widely used resistive touch-screens are made of two layers of glass and film (glass). This structure affects display visibility due to reflections off the surfaces of these layers. When used outdoors or in other bright environments, resistive touch-screens are often very difficult to see because of the glare.

Buoyed by the widespread use of multi-function, high-performance cell phones and mobile devices, demand for touch-screen panels with superior visibility and multi-touch capability has skyrocketed in recent years. Mitsubishi Electric has been working to develop techniques to replace the protective glass layer with a capacitive touch-screen panel using our innovative glass-bonding technology described earlier. Use of capacitive touch-screen panels will significantly improve the visibility of LCD screens, and will definitely enhance the industrial applications where touch-screen LCD monitors are often used.
