SOLUTIONS

Large-capacity battery control system

High quality solutions to solve problems caused
by the introduction of renewable energy

Introduction of renewable energy sources is progressing for the low-carbon and sustainable society. Photovoltaic and wind power, cleaner and more cost-effective than conventional power generation, are expected to grow into primary power sources. However, large-scale introduction of renewable energy involves various challenges such as its unstable and intermittent output due to weather conditions.

Mitsubishi Electric has provided solutions to these challenges. We have introduced battery energy storage systems for Photovoltaic, wind power plants, remote islands and power trading with various element technologies verified in our smart grid demonstration project.

We will offer the optimal system solution with the best combination of battery and PCS utilizing our system integration technology and energy management system.

Renewable Energy

Renewable energy management

Monitors and controls renewables and storage battery systems.

Three main challenges on large-scale introduction of renewable energy

Frequency variation

Cause

The frequency varies depending on the supply-demand balance due to the unstable and intermittent output of renewable energy.

Countermeasures

● Control output variation of solar and wind power generation

● Upgrade technologies for pumped storage generation

● Install storage batteries

Surplus power

Cause

Excessive power is generated because photovoltaic output reaches its peak when power demand drops.

Countermeasures

● Install storage batteries

● Suppress the output of photovoltaic and wind power generation

● Spur demand

Voltage fluctuation in distribution lines

Cause

Reverse power flow is caused by excess power generated by the numerous photovoltaic generation systems connected to distribution lines.

Countermeasures

● Install voltage regulators

● Suppress power output from photovoltaic generation

TOPICS

World’s largest battery energy storage systems will contribute
to stabilizing power supply by large-scale wind power generation

Our energy management system BLEnDer® RE will be adopted for one of world’s largest battery energy storage systems* (output: 240MW, rating capacity: 720MWh) to be built as part of Kita Toyotomi Substation (to start operation in FY2023) of North Hokkaido Wind Energy Transmission Corporation.
This battery energy storage system is expected to largely contribute to resolving system constraints and stable power supply toward large-scale introduction of wind power generation in the future in Northern Hokkaido, an area with good wind conditions in Japan.
