Mitsubishi Electric Research Laboratories (MERL) is the North American arm of the Corporate R&D Group and conducts application-motivated basic research and advanced development in electronics, digital communications, media processing, data analytics, spatial information processing, mechatronics and optimization technologies.

MERL is organized into six groups according to technology areas, which collaborate with each other closely to achieve groundbreaking results. It maintains active collaboration with major US universities, and makes positive contributions to international standardization. The current research groups work in the following areas.

Efficient acquisition, representation, processing, security, and interaction of multimedia including 1) Digital Video (video compression, image processing), 2) Speech & Audio (voice search, speech enhancement, acoustic modeling/analysis), 3) Information Security (privacy-preserving data analysis, secure signal processing), and 4) Sensing (compressive sensing, array signal processing).
