Manu Darshan, a young footballer from Albirex Singapore Football Academy, shared the valuable lessons he gained during a football clinic hosted by Mitsubishi Electric at Bedok Stadium. The clinic, part of the lead-up to the ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup™ 2024, provided an opportunity for youth in Singapore to learn from top international coaches, including Isao Dobashi from FC Imabari in Japan, who introduced the players to the renowned Okada Method of football training.
Manu expressed his thoughts about the clinic: “I was nervous before the clinic because normally I don’t play that well. But after the clinic, I see some improvements in myself. With the way I defend, I can now strike better. I’m very happy.”
The clinic introduced participants to advanced techniques and strategies. Manu was particularly enthusiastic about how much he learned in terms of teamwork and movement on the field. He found the 4-on-2 drills especially challenging. “The most difficult part, I would say, was the 4v2 because it was hard to get the ball as a defender. You don’t know who or where they would pass to,” Manu noted, emphasizing how enjoyable and insightful the training felt.
The key takeaway for Manu was the Okada Method itself. “I think it’s quite good. The Okada Method taught me a lot today. Normally, in my academy, the coaches teach me dribbling and how to defend. But here, they taught me how to be open and pass properly. The things I learned were different.”
The day ended with a 6-on-6 match, which Manu found to be the most enjoyable part of the clinic. “The most enjoyable part was the last part where it was a 6v6, and we had to celebrate together, otherwise it’s not a goal.”
The exercise allowed the young players to experience the full dynamics of teamwork, blending individual talent with collective strategy. This clinic not only gave Manu a chance to sharpen his football skills but also reinforced his passion for the game. As he continues his football journey, he hopes to take these lessons forward, dreaming of one day playing on a bigger stage.
