Mitsubishi Electric is an R&D leader, both in Japan and globally. In Japan, we’re number one in registered patents*1, we have been top for patent asset size for four consecutive years*2, and are in the top ten for R&D expenditures*3. Where the fruits of our efforts are truly reflected is in our prestigious second ranking*4 in international patent applications. Our wide array of businesses fosters new perspectives among our researchers, and this sparks new discoveries and synergies.

A global R&D network

At R&D facilities in Japan, the USA, the UK, France and China, our researchers focus on different technological themes. What they all share, however, is a human-centric approach to development that is based on listening to local needs. To maximize our R&D activities, we also promote open innovation by working proactively with universities and other external R&D institutions.

We focus our R&D efforts on technology platforms that can be used across our product portfolio. One example is our Maisart* brand of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. In the development process, we’re able to tap into our know-how in equipment for factories, buildings, vehicles and other applications to take greater advantage of AI. By making devices smarter, we hope to help realize a safer, more convenient society.

Blue Skies Above: Emulating Skylights in Office Environments

How does one recreate a clear blue sky using just lighting? It is an immense, technologically challenging task that up till now was believed to require a fixture with a thickness of at least 30 to 70 cm — a design that would make it all but impossible to use in any room with a standard ceiling height. However, Mitsubishi Electric has achieved the impossible: an LED skylight with a thickness of 12 cm or less (that’s less than most ceiling lights). Not only that, it’s also capable of producing a skylight effect with a real sense of depth and no shadow blurring.


Spider Maintenance: How Arachnid Robots Help Keep Electricity Generation Stable

It’s called the GenSPIDER®: a 19.9 mm-thick arachnid robot that realizes drastic thinness and precise movement with minimal vibration. Mitsubishi Electric has developed the ultra-thin spider robot for optimizing machine maintenance processes. Robot involvement has reduced the typical one to two months required for electric generator inspection to just six days, and the adroit arachnid also adapts to maintenance needs for a variety of Mitsubishi Electric’s mid- and high-capacity electric generators.
