Mitsubishi Electric’s FA systems business aims to enable employees to fully demonstrate their ideas, technologies, and beliefs to achieve the common goal of “Automating the World.”
Through the “Road to Automating the World” series, we share their authentic voices from around the world.
In this article, we interviewed Chuang Tsunghan, Sales Department 1, of Mitsubishi Electric Automation (Taiwan) Co., Ltd., who is working to expand the share of Mitsubishi Electric’s programmable controllers in the Taiwanese semiconductor market.

Aiming to Make Valuable Proposals Based on Customer Feedback

── How did you come to join Mitsubishi Electric?

Chuang:I have enjoyed creating things, such as model making and sculpting with clay, since I was a child, and went on to study electrical engineering at university. In one of the automatic control classes, we used Mitsubishi Electric’s programmable controllers, which made me realize how Mitsubishi Electric products were trusted by many and how popular they were across manufacturing sites. As I was interested in Japanese culture and Japanese-affiliated companies, I took part in recruitment exams. During my job hunting, I was attracted to a chance to take on a wide variety of challenges, including the development of human resources, communication with customers, as well as the development and manufacturing of products. That’s what made me decide to join Mitsubishi Electric.

── Could you tell us what your role and mission is in your current job.

Chuang:My mission is to expand the market share of Mitsubishi Electric programmable controllers in the Taiwanese semiconductor industry. Taiwan is currently experiencing rapid growth in its semiconductor industry, holding one of the largest shares in the world. This, in turn, is driving demand for programmable controllers needed for semiconductor production. As the senior manager of a sales department, I serve as the primary contact point for our products. I am engaged in a wide range of duties, including liaison with customers and handling of their inquiries, as well as gathering detailed information on markets, on-site tuning of installed equipment, and even product promotion.

── Do you have any beliefs or principles that you prioritize in your work?

Chuang:I am trying to closely communicate with customers to ensure that I understand exactly what they want. I believe that truly valuable proposals can only be created by listening to customers’ needs and concerns. When faced with customer issues and requests, I work to fully understand their specific situation in order to develop appropriate solutions. I present my proposals with clear and thorough explanations. This approach not only resolves the issues, but builds the trust that is required for long-lasting relationships with customers.

Believing that Improvements in Manufacturing Contribute to Society

── Could you share an anecdote that has inspired you?

Chuang: As Mitsubishi Electric is a Japanese company, a major hurdle in my work was to communicate accurately with Japanese supervisors and the company’s facilities in Japan. So, I took advantage of a two year on the job training opportunity in Osaka to learn Japanese and build relationships with colleagues at our Japanese factories and headquarters. Later, I also participated in an overseas dispatch program from Taiwan to Nagoya Works to further strengthen those relationships. As a result, the trust I built, together with improved language skills, enabled me to understand the true meaning of what they said. This was very helpful for me to carry out my duties efficiently. From this experience, I always place great importance on close communication, both within the company and with customers, to understand their true intentions.

── How has this experience translated into results?

Chuang:In just over six months since I became a senior manager, product sales has grown by about 50% year-on-year. This was because I made sure to thoroughly understand the customer needs through ample communication. This, in turn, allowed us to prepare in good time, for example, by securing sufficient stocks ahead of a surge in demand so that we were ready to react swiftly. My personal connections, built through internal communication, have also contributed to our results. For example, when working on an application development, I was able to collaborate with other departments to deliver solutions that met the customer’s needs. This trust has helped us build long-term relationships with our customers, who now choose Mitsubishi Electric products for their new semiconductor projects.

── Could you share your vision for Monozukuri, (the Art of Manufacturing)

Chuang:We have been working on the safe and efficient operation of customers facilities. I believe that we are helping society as a whole to enhance production efficiency and safety, as well as improve production processes. We are currently witnessing dramatic innovation in technologies. I hope that the AI industry, which is currently attracting attention, will thrive, as well as manufacturing of industrial IoT and digital devices, by delivering high-performance and high-quality products to every corner of the world. I am looking forward to the future, in which technologies can help create an efficient and safe society.
