Atmospheric Environment Measurement

Pioneering and Spreading Fiber-Optic LiDAR for Atmospheric Measurement

Dr. Shumpei Kameyama has significantly advanced atmospheric measurement by developing fiber-optic LiDAR technology and promoting its global adoption. Stable remote sensing of the atmosphere is increasingly vital for aviation safety, wind power efficiency, and environmental monitoring. Dr. Kameyama developed a LiDAR system using fiber-optic circuits, enabling reliable measurements and contributing to its international standardization. This achievement earned him IEEE Fellow status in 2024.

Conventional LiDAR systems required precise optical alignment, which limited their practicality. Kameyama's approach—connecting components with optical fibers—eliminated this need, improving reliability, scalability, and compactness. By combining Mitsubishi Electric's proprietary optical control technologies with atmospheric science expertise, he realized stable remote sensing of the atmosphere. The technology has been successfully applied in wind power optimization, aviation safety, and greenhouse gas monitoring.

During development, Kameyama faced challenges due to the atmosphere's variability. In the early stages, he spent a year measuring aerosols in the atmosphere for better understanding of environmental conditions and for improvement of measurement stability.
His recognition as an IEEE Fellow reflects not only his contributions to scientific advancement but also his leadership in international standardization and his role in transforming the field of wind sensing. Kameyama credits these achievements to close collaboration with internal and external partners, and to Mitsubishi Electric's long-standing commitment to LiDAR research.

He is now leading young researchers as a general manager and encouraging them toward future innovations.

Messages to young researchers:

Profile

Dr. Kameyama joined Mitsubishi Electric in 1995, starting at the Information Technology R&D Center, where he worked on ultrasonic sensors for non-destructive testing. Around 2000, he began developing LiDAR for atmospheric measurement. He earned a Ph.D. in Engineering in 2011 and has since led projects in optical sensing, including 3D imaging LiDAR.
In 2023, he received Mitsubishi Electric's internal certification as an International Standardization Grand Master. In 2024, he was named an IEEE Fellow. He currently serves as General Manager of the Sensor Information Processing Systems Department at the Advanced Technology R&D Center.
He is a member of IEEE, Optica, the Japan Society of Applied Physics, and the Laser Radar Society of Japan.
