Collaborative Green Space Conservation and Biodiversity
The Kamakura Works manufactures guided projectile systems and satellite-related equipment. It is located in a nature-rich environment in the Kamakura area in Kanagawa Prefecture, surrounded by both sea and mountains. At the Kamakura Works, we have been collaborating with affiliated companies and exchanging information to enhance the quality of green spaces in the area. Based on the results of biodiversity surveys, each company has been undertaking a variety of initiatives, including rare species conservation, countermeasures against invasive species, and the development of green spaces for employee relaxation.
Our approach to managing green spaces within the area is currently shaped by three concepts. These concepts are “a green space that welcome visitors,” “a green space for employee relaxation,” and “a green space that contributes to biodiversity conservation.” We design planting schemes to align with each concept.

Recreating Local Ecosystems to Nurture Wildlife
Inspired by the vegetation of nearby parks, we planted locally native species in the “green space that contributes to biodiversity conservation” (approximately 2,180 m²). This green space replicates the region’s natural environment. We designed the green space to be a welcoming habitat for birds and insects by varying tree heights and proactively planting fruit-bearing species. We installed a walking path to allow employees to observe nature up close and appreciate biodiversity.
The “green space for employee relaxation” (approximately 870 m²) was inspired by the Kamakura Work’s main product-satellites-and designed to resemble the solar system. A rain garden that only fills with water on rainy days represents the sun, and eight symbolic trees representing planets are arranged around it. Each tree species was selected to reflect the characteristics of its corresponding planet-for example, a weeping willow was planted at Mercury’s position, and a Yoshino cherry tree at Earth’s.
