Striving to Be a Factory That Connects with the Community through Plants

The Iida Factory of the Nakatsugawa Works is located in Iida City, nestled in the mountains of Nagano Prefecture. We have planted apple trees, which are the official tree of Iida City, around the perimeter of the factory. With these apple trees, we not only promote harmony with the local environment, but also foster community ties by donating harvested apples to nearby welfare facilities.

We have also set up multiple green spaces within the factory grounds where employees can relax.

Since April 2021, we have been cultivating locally native species like Satsuki azaleas and golden-rayed lilies on-site and transplanting them within the region. We work closely with the local government and community members when choosing species for preservation. This initiative is designed to be a new model case for the Mitsubishi Electric Group's biodiversity conservation activities and has the potential for broad application and long-term sustainability.

Connecting with the Community through Apples, the Official Tree of the City

The Iida Factory is located in Nagano Prefecture’s Iida City, which is known for apple production. When the Iida Factory was founded in 1974, embracing the idea of being open to the community, we planted 74 apple trees of 8 varieties instead of building a fence around the factory. These apple trees were received from orchards that were scheduled to close.

We manage the apple trees not only as ornamental plants, but also as fruit-bearing trees, harvesting around 30,000 apples annually. Local farms help us with tree care such as pruning and fertilizing. We process damaged apples into juice with the support of local food processing companies. We donate harvested apples to a local welfare facility and give them as souvenirs to factory tour visitors. By managing the apple trees and using their fruit, we enrich our engagement with the community.
