A Better Home for Rescued Cats - Mitsubishi Electric Taiwan’s Support for a Cat Shelter

Improving Indoor Environments in Urban Cat Shelters

Improving Indoor Environments in Urban Cat Shelters

In recent years, the number of newly registered dogs and cats in Taiwan has surpassed the number of newborn babies, reflecting how pets are increasingly regarded as cherished members of the family. At the same time, many stray cats still require protection and care, supported largely by the dedication of volunteers working at rescue facilities throughout Taiwan. In densely populated urban areas, shelters that care for large numbers of cats often face a significant challenge: maintaining a clean, comfortable indoor environment within limited space.
Against this backdrop, Mitsubishi Electric Taiwan began collaborating in 2021 with Xinwu Cat Shelter, a cat rescue facility located in Taoyuan City in northern Taiwan, to help improve indoor environmental conditions. Through this initiative, the company aims to create a safer and more comfortable space for both the rescued cats and the people who care for them.

About Xinwu Cat Shelter

Xinwu Cat Shelter is a non-profit facility run entirely by volunteers, dedicated to rescuing injured, abandoned, and orphaned cats. In addition to providing a safe, clean, and secure temporary home, the shelter actively promotes the idea of “adopt, don’t shop,” encouraging people to welcome rescued cats into their families.
Volunteers are involved daily in cleaning, feeding, and monitoring the cats’ health, striving to ensure that each cat can spend its time at the shelter in a calm and stress-free environment until it finds a new home.

The Importance of Air Quality for Cats’ Health

Compared to humans, cats have very little nasal hair and are less able to filter fine dust and airborne particles. As a result, they are more susceptible to allergens and pollutants in the air, which over time may lead to respiratory issues such as sneezing, runny noses, rhinitis, or asthma.
Even in indoor spaces with closed windows, pollutants can be brought in through human movement. In environments where frequent ventilation is difficult, managing air quality becomes particularly important. Volunteers at the shelter were keenly aware that maintaining clean air was essential to protecting the cats’ long-term health.

Changes After Installation and Feedback from the Site

As part of this initiative, Mitsubishi Electric Taiwan installed Health Air circulation fans suited the shelter’s on-site conditions, including limited space and the need for easy maintenance. After installation, volunteers reported a noticeable reduction in accumulated dust and cat hair, along with an overall improvement in perceived air cleanliness. Even in an environment where more than 100 cats live together, a significant reduction in odors was observed.

A partner veterinarian who regularly visits the shelter also noted that, compared with other multi-cat facilities, the indoor air felt remarkably clean and that there was little noticeable odor upon arrival. These improvements have contributed to a more comfortable environment not only for the cats, but also for the volunteers who care for them on a daily basis.
Cleaner air has also improved the experience for visitors. Without concerns about odors or environmental stress, visitors are able to spend time with the cats in a calmer and more relaxed atmosphere. As a result, the cats’ individual personalities and appeal are more easily conveyed, helping to create more opportunities for adoption.

Going Beyond Equipment Support

Since 2021, Mitsubishi Electric Taiwan has donated a range of equipment to Xinwu Cat Shelter, including circulation fans, refrigerators, dehumidifiers, and Lossnay ventilation systems. In addition, the company has co-hosted a total of 12 educational seminars on cat care.
These seminars, led by volunteers and veterinarians, covered topics such as feline behavior, daily nutrition, health management, and common illnesses. Through these activities, the initiative aims to deepen understanding of what it means to care for a rescued cat before adoption, while also offering prospective adopters an opportunity to consider whether life with a cat is the right fit for them.
Looking ahead, Mitsubishi Electric Taiwan seeks to contribute not only through the provision of technology and products, but also by helping to foster greater awareness of animal welfare across society. Through continued engagement with local communities, the company aims to support the creation of a society in which people and animals can build healthier and more positive relationships.
