ALMA is an international project to construct a radio telescope array that consists of more than 66 parabolic antennas constructed in the Chilean Andes. The array will function as a single giant telescope with resolution equivalent to an antenna 18km across, and use millimeter/submillimeter waves to observe interstellar matter not observable with visible or infrared lights. Japan's role is to provide 16 high-precision antennas vital for high imaging resolution. These 16 antennas are being designed and manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric.
