Mitsubishi Electric Awarded Contract for Acquisition of Anti-Air Warfare Systems for Australia’s Future Fleet of General-purpose Frigates

Japan’s first export of these frigates will enhance defense cooperation between Japan and Australia

TOKYO, April 18, 2026 - Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (TOKYO: 6503) announced today that it has signed a contract entitled “Acquisition of Anti-Air Warfare Systems for Australia’s Future Fleet of General-purpose Frigates” with the Australian Department of Defence. Based on the contract, Mitsubishi Electric will manufacture anti-air warfare systems to be installed on Australia’s future fleet of general-purpose frigates.

In August 2025, the Australian government selected the upgraded version (06FFM) of the Japanese “Mogami- class” frigate for its future fleet of general-purpose frigates.

Mitsubishi Electric manufactures the anti-air warfare systems used in Mogami-class frigates operated by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. The company’s advanced technical capabilities and proven track record of developing and manufacturing defense equipment were highly evaluated, leading to the company’s selection as the supplier of anti-air warfare systems for Australia’s future fleet of general-purpose frigates.

Under the contract, Mitsubishi Electric will leverage its advanced sensor and information-processing technologies to contribute to the Royal Australian Navy’s intelligence-gathering and surveillance capabilities as well as strengthen defense cooperation between Japan and Australia through advanced technologies.
