GIST (pronounced “jist”) stands for Global Initiative for Sustainable Technology. We launched the project in 2023 so that diverse members from across the Mitsubishi Electric Group could come together to drive new business creation from a globally sustainable perspective.

The goal with GIST is to be a nature-positive front-runner. While remembering the fact that natural capital – the foundation of our lives and economic activity – is being lost to climate change and environmental pollution, we are advancing efforts knowing that we will use the power of innovation to restore a thriving planet and pass it on to future generations.

This movie presents the impact of environmental challenges society is currently facing. It features fire as a symbol of those challenges, such as climate change, while the wax serves as a symbol of the lives and natural surroundings those issues continue to impact. As environmental destruction progresses, the lives in those environments come under silent threat. This film creatively conveys that reality through stop-motion animation.

The key message, “Take Back What Matters,” encapsulates our determination to pursue choices that balance protection for the global environment with economic development, and to contribute to a stable world for future generations.

Concept development took about 18 months. An illustrator drew the characters, that were then all made from wax. The movie was assembled using over 2,500 photographs.

The story begins on Earth, where the main character is enjoying life, while other living creatures and nature begin to melt away.

As we sincerely confront the crisis we are facing, we will strive for a world filled with peace of mind for all life through sustainability-based businesses and co-creation.

The phrase “future generations” carries the strong desire of GIST team members to deliver value to coming generations. The expression “restore a thriving planet” reflects our sense of crisis about the abundance which we are clearly losing. If we do not act now, it will be gone forever. That is why we have resolved to reclaim as much of that richness as we can and carry it forward. It is our mission to achieve this through innovation.

Our goal is not simply to race toward the head of the pack, but to become a presence that naturally draws others together through a positive influence on those around us. We want to be the catalyst for a change in behavior—creating a great swell toward a sustainable future. This is why we have chosen to call ourselves a “front-runner ” rather than a “top-runner.” We strive for a world where nature, society, and the economy are in harmony, and where both people and the planet can thrive together.
