Global Youth Service Day at Sunrise Lake Outdoor Education Center
On April 13, 2012 volunteers from the VISION Committee (Volunteers In Service Intent On Needs) at Mitsubishi Electric Automation, Inc. in Vernon Hills, Illinois, USA, celebrated Global Youth Service Day by donating their time and talent to help the Sunrise Lake Outdoor Education Center maintain its grounds and provide learning opportunities for children with disabilities. Twenty volunteers spent the day clearing buckthorn to ensure the safety of students, weeded the grounds and built a new fence. Volunteers even built a new canoe rack to make it more accessible for students. Finally, volunteers used a fallen tree to create a vernal pond classroom where the students can learn about their environment. This new classroom has already become popular with the students. In addition to this project, the VISION committee continues to partner with the Special Education District of Lake County hosting annual Disability Mentoring Days each October during National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This event allows high school students with disabilities to visit the company location and participate in job shadowing activities before they graduate. These projects are just a sample of the ways Mitsubishi Electric Automation, Inc. and VISION are committed to helping the environment and children with disabilities.
