The Living Environment & Digital Media Equipment Group focuses on the air-conditioning and refrigeration systems business, one of the growth-driving sectors at Mitsubishi Electric. In addition to expanding operations in the room and package air-conditioner segment, we are pressing forward with the creation of new business and strengthening existing ones through synergies in technologies and business operations.
As we expand business, we believe it is important to provide products and services that contribute simultaneously to achieving sustainability, safety, security, and comfort. Part of this includes supplying a broad range of environment-friendly products and services for the home, office, and industry. These include air conditioners that produce less CO2 during use and our energy-saving EcoCute product lineup. We also offer photovoltaic systems that generate renewable energy and do not produce CO2 during power generation. Additionally, Mitsubishi Electric proposes solutions that aim to achieve energy savings by systems as a whole in support of programs such as ZEH and ZEB, promoted by the Japanese government.
Meanwhile, as activities to reduce CO2 from production, the Living Environment & Digital Media Equipment Group is proactively introducing energy-saving products at production sites; namely, high-efficiency air-conditioners, heat-pump hot-water supply systems, LED lighting, and photovoltaic systems. We are also promoting energy-saving activities by improving productivity linked to just-in-time improvement activities based on e-F@ctory concepts.
Focusing on the SDGs
Room and package air conditioners and other products sold by Mitsubishi Electric incorporate various devices in order to simultaneously achieve improved energy-efficiency performance and maximum comfort. Such efforts were recognized by the Energy Conservation Center, Japan (ECCJ), and four Mitsubishi Electric products received honors in the Products and Business Models Category of the Fiscal 2019 Energy Conservation Grand Prize presented by the organization.

The MILIE LED lighting brand name was coined from the words "Mitsubishi", "lighting", and "ecology". It expresses our desire to make positive contributions to Earth and society through LED lighting. The lineup has been expanded to include products for a wide variety of applications according to facilities and space. These include My Series LED base lights mainly for offices, GT Series high-ceiling LED base lights for factories, warehouses, and gymnasiums, AK Series LED spotlights for retail stores, and the MILCO.NET and MILCO.S lighting control systems, which simultaneously achieve improved comfort and reduced power consumption.

The DIAMONDSOLAR® system has a remarkable power generation capacity that uses a combination of high-output modules and high-efficiency power conditioners. Additionally, by combining the Multi Roof Series, which comes in a wide variety of shapes, the power generation area of a roof can be maximized, thereby generating plentiful electricity for daily life.

The EcoCute heat-pump hot-water supply system has a Weather Link AI function*2 that can be linked to a Mitsubishi Electric photovoltaic power generation system*3 by utilizing a Mitsubishi HEMS.*4 Based on the weather forecast and previous solar power generation records, artificial intelligence (AI) automatically determines whether or not to use solar power-generated electricity to supply hot water on the next day. By optimizing the timing of night-time water heating, energy efficiency is boosted.
We have developed technologies to automaically separate three types of plastics (i.e., PP, PS and ABS) used in home electrical products from a mixture of different materials originating from home appliances. We have also improved the identification of physical properties when separating materials, and are pressing forward with an original recycling system in which plastics recovered from home electrical appliances are recycled and used to manufacture our home electrical products.
In addition to contributing to society through our business operations, we are striving to reduce the negative environmental impact stemming from our business activities. Some of the initiatives we are implementing are as follows.
Our manufacturing sites and affiliates utilize the Company's core energy-saving products—namely, high-efficiency air-conditioners, heat-pump hot-water supply systems, and LED lighting—and reduce CO2 emissions from production. We have also installed photovoltaic systems that contribute to the reduction of peak electricity demand during the summer.
We have introduced initiatives such as company-wide just-in-time improvement activities in factories to reduce equipment operating loss, improve logistics, and better review production methods. Other similar energy-saving activities are also resulting in higher productivity.
In response to the EU RoHS directive that specifically calls for eliminating the use of hazardous substances and the REACH regulation requiring that information on chemical substance content be provided, we are intensifying the control of chemical substances throughout the supply chain in product procurement, design, production, sales, and services.
